Carlow Folk Club, May 2009

Hi all!
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to run the folk club this season, but we do have one gig coming up that may interest you. On Friday, May 7th Kevin Burke is returning to Carlow to play in Teach Dolmain. He will be accompanied by Cal Scott, the guitarist who features on Kevin’s last two albums.
Kevin Burke is an exceptional fiddle player.. He was born in London to parents from County Sligo in 1950. He took up the fiddle at age eight, eventually acquiring a virtuosic technique in the Sligo fiddling style. He later became a member of the well known Irish traditional music groups The Bothy Band (in 1976) and Patrick Street (in 1986). He settled in Portland, Oregon in 1979. He has played as a longstanding member of the Celtic Fiddle Festival since their inception in the early 1990's. Burke currently lives in Portland with his wife and two children.
Cal Scott composes music for film and television. A master of many styles, his specialty is scoring to picture: creating the right music to tell the story. In addition to his dramatic orchestrations, he has developed a feel for folk music of many cultures, helping a film establish a sense of place and time.
He has scored over thirty documentaries and specials for PBS, fifteen films in permanent installations in national parks and museums, and commercials for Kelloggs, Apple, and Sony among others.
He writes and performs with The Trail Band, an 8 piece folk ensemble, and has co-produced a number of CDs for himself, The Trail Band, and other artists.  He also performs and records with Kevin. Their 2007 CD, Across the Black River, was called “...one of the top twelve world music releases of the year,” by the New York Times.
I hope you can come along to the gig. If attendance is poor, I’m afraid we will have to consider the future of the folk club. We are at present planning for the coming winter run, but cannot continue without support.
The gig is in the usual venue, Teach Dolmain at 9.30pm, Friday May 7th. Admission is €15.
